Thousands of hulking ghost ships that sit rusting in harbors the world over are now considered toxic waste following a decision by 163 countries late last week under the Basel Convention to minimize the global movement of hazardous waste.
Ghost ships are old,
unwanted commercial and military vessels sold for scrap metal. They
almost always contain toxic PCBs, asbestos, mercury, lead, waste diesel
and fuel oils, and other dangerous substances. Hundreds of these ships
are run aground on the beaches of Bangladesh and India, where swarms of
laborers known as shipbreakers cut them into pieces to recover the
steel.
The US also has an inventory of 125 retired military ships - the 'ghost fleet'
It
is dangerous work removing the ships, so many are destined to float for
many more years until they entirely decompose and whatever spirits are
aboard the ships will have a home for a while yet.
